Looking Toward the Future

Let's face it: change, even when we look forward to it, can make us anxious. The changes that are completely out of our control, however, are by far the worst—when your favorite player gets traded to a new team, for example, or your favorite magazine is suddenly run by some person that you've never heard of.

I hate it when that happens.

Change is life, though—and on that note, I would like to thank Bluejack for this opportunity and to let all of you know that I intend to do my very best to continue to bring you the quality essays and reviews that you're used to seeing. I think this issue is a great example of that and with Bluejack now available to make even more improvements to the site, things are only going to get better from here.

In case you're curious about the new person on the other side of the screen, I'm originally from southern California and decided to move up to Seattle two years ago to finish school. I'm now in my final year at Seattle University, where I run the campus literary magazine, and I am also an Associate Editor for Æon Speculative Fiction. I'm thrilled to now be involved in IROSF as well, where my incessant need to make lists and keep tasks organized will not only find an outlet, but will also be put to good use.

We've been getting some great submissions lately, and I'd love to see more. I'm not necessarily making a blatant call for submissions, so much as reminding you how much we love them. Do you see something in Douglas Adams's five book "trilogy," The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, that others missed? What effect do MMORPGs have on the genre, if any? Maybe you'd like to say something about the miniseries Tin Man that premiered on the Sci-Fi channel a few months ago. If you can tell our readers something about the genre or the field that they haven't read elsewhere, then read our submission guidelines and send it along to us. And don't forget the reviews!

I'm looking forward to working with you—the reader, the contributor, the fellow editor—to make each and every issue better than the last. We've got some great new features coming soon, so watch out for those and in the meantime, be sure to stop by the forums if you have a reply to an article or even if you just want to start a conversation relating to something in the field. Speaking of things relating to the field, have you seen our news feature? It's coming soon to an RSS feed near you! (Until then, though, it's pretty much just here.)
